Handcrafted in Jaipur
Made to Order
Hand-thrown terracotta

Terracotta has always kept things cool. Madira reinterprets this familiar property through an integrated ice well at its centre, a stacked form that recalls traditional water vessels, and a serving surface above. The powder-coated metal stand supports the terracotta forms, allowing them to stack one above another like beads while giving the piece its structural stability. The recessed top is removable, allowing the ice well to be lifted out and used independently when needed. Utility, material memory and ritual come together in a single object.

An age-old material, given a new ritual.

Madira began with a simple observation: terracotta has always known how to keep things cool.

For generations, terracotta vessels have been used to naturally cool and hold water. We wanted to take that familiar property out of the vessel and give it a new role — one that belonged around a table rather than beside a well.

The form emerged as a stacked composition, recalling the proportions and memory of traditional water vessels. At its centre, we introduced a recessed well designed to hold ice, allowing the natural cooling properties of the terracotta to become part of the experience.

The wine sits around it, the ice within it, and the table becomes a small ritual of serving, gathering and lingering.

Holding wine in earth’s quiet cool.

The Materials

Every material and finish is chosen with intention.

01 Terracotta

Madira draws on terracotta’s natural ability to keep water cool, reimagining this age-old quality as an integrated ice well. The material allows a traditional function to become part of a contemporary drink table.

02 Geru Mitti

Madira is coloured using geru mitti, a natural red earth pigment traditionally used across India. The natural pigment gives the terracotta its warm, earthy tone while retaining the character of the material beneath.

03 Gilded Steel

Steel forms the structural support within Madira, bringing strength and balance to the terracotta form while remaining a subtle part of the object.

Our Commitment to the Earth

Made to last.
Because true sustainability
begins with longevity.

At Chars Diwari, materials are chosen for beauty, durability, and responsibility in equal measure. We work with responsibly sourced teak, and favour natural materials that age gracefully - terracotta, cane, solid teak - valued for their ability to endure decades of everyday living without diminishing. Cane in particular is quick-growing and renewable, harvested without felling. Every piece is made to order in our Jaipur workshop, so nothing is produced to sit in a warehouse.
