A terracotta disc meets red-stained concave teak disk in Grahan, creating a quiet composition of light and shadow inspired by the eclipse. The lamp uses the contrast between the earthy opacity of terracotta and the warmth of teak to shape a soft, partially veiled glow. A small object with a strong presence, Grahan turns the familiar act of illumination into a study of shadow.
Each piece is handmade — minor variations in grain, curve, and finish are inherent to the craft and make every piece one of a kind.
Wipe clean with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals. As each piece is handcrafted from natural materials, subtle variations are part of its unique character.

Between Light and Shadow.
We wanted to make a lamp where light was not the only thing being seen.
Grahan began with the idea of an eclipse — that fleeting moment when light is partially concealed, making the darkness around it feel just as present.
The terracotta disc became the starting point. Rather than allowing the light to simply escape into the room, the material interrupts it, creating a controlled relationship between illumination and shadow. The red-stained teak plate and base frame this interaction, bringing warmth to the otherwise quiet composition.
The result is deliberately restrained. The light is never completely revealed; it appears through what conceals it, creating a glow that feels softer, deeper and more atmospheric.
Grahan is a lamp shaped not by the absence of light, but by everything that stands between us and it.

The Materials
Terracotta and wood, set apart so light can pass between them.
The concave plate behind the disc is turned from solid teak, its curve shaped to sit close without touching, and the base is cut from the same wood. Teak takes the turning cleanly and holds a smooth surface across the curve.
A natural pigment stain developed in our workshop, not a commercial polish. It sits in the grain, so the teak stays visible through the colour. Against the black terracotta, the red is what carries the glow.
The disc is hand-thrown on the wheel and fired in Jaipur kilns, then finished dark at the centre. Terracotta holds light differently from glass or metal — the fired surface takes the glow and holds it at the edge rather than releasing it into the room.

At Chars Diwari, materials are chosen for beauty, durability, and responsibility in equal measure. We work with responsibly sourced teak, and favour natural materials that age gracefully - terracotta, cane, solid teak - valued for their ability to endure decades of everyday living without diminishing. Cane in particular is quick-growing and renewable, harvested without felling. Every piece is made to order in our Jaipur workshop, so nothing is produced to sit in a warehouse.
