Design origin story

Saksh

साक्ष — sākṣh — witness

Saksh began with a simple experiment in weaving. We first created a woven structure inspired by the proportions and silhouette of the human body — almost like a mannequin.

The form was interesting from the beginning. It had a sense of presence, with the weave giving the body texture and softness. But once we had created it, we were unsure what it was meant to become. We did not want to simply add a light to an existing form. We wanted the light to feel like it belonged to the structure.

So we began thinking about the human body itself. The idea came from the chest — the place where the heart sits, and where we often imagine something deeper to exist. The heart, the soul, an inner energy. We started wondering what would happen if the light came from within the body rather than being placed outside it. This led us to introduce a glowing form at the centre of the chest. Almost like a small totem, it became the focal point of the piece — a light held within the woven body.

The weave then took on a new role. It was no longer simply the material used to create the structure. The woven surface allowed the light to softly move through and around the form, creating a gentle glow that extended beyond the centre.

What began as a simple woven mannequin slowly became a lamp inspired by the idea of a human form carrying light within itself. Saksh is a body made of weave, with light at its centre — a quiet representation of the light we carry within.

"Light from within, shining through."
