A Composition of Parts, Held in Balance

Golav began with the idea of giving the humble corner table a presence of its own.

Corner tables are often treated as secondary objects within a space — functional surfaces placed beside a sofa, between chairs, or quietly against a wall. They are designed to support the larger pieces around them, rarely becoming an object of attention themselves. Golav began by questioning that idea.

What if a corner table could have a stronger identity? What if, instead of disappearing into its surroundings, it could become a composition in its own right?

The design developed around a relationship between distinct forms and materials. A circular teak top sits above a handwoven wicker sphere, connected through carefully considered electro-plated stainless steel elements and grounded by a tapered wooden base. Each component has its own visual language. The warmth and grain of teak bring a sense of familiarity and weight. The wicker sphere introduces softness, texture and a more tactile quality to the composition. The stainless steel connections add precision and structure, creating a contrast between the handmade and the engineered.

Below, the tapered wooden base anchors the entire form, giving the table stability while allowing the elements above it to feel almost suspended. The wicker sphere became the visual centre of the piece. Placed between the teak top and the wooden base, it creates a moment of tension and balance. Its woven surface contrasts with the smoothness of the wood and the sharp precision of metal, while its circular form is echoed in the tabletop above. The sphere gives Golav its distinct identity — transforming a familiar table into something more sculptural and layered. The construction was designed to allow every material to remain visible and recognisable. Rather than blending the different elements into a single uniform surface, Golav brings them together as individual parts. Their contrast is what creates the character of the object.

From different angles, the layered composition reveals itself differently. The circular top, central sphere and tapered base create a vertical rhythm, while the exposed connections introduce smaller moments of detail. The result is a form that feels composed rather than assembled — a balance between distinct materials, shapes and proportions. Golav is functional as a side table, but its purpose extends beyond use. Even when it is not holding a book, a glass or an object, it remains present within a space. It was designed to occupy a corner without simply becoming part of the background. A familiar object, reconsidered through form, material and balance.

"Golav is a corner table designed to hold its own."
